Subject: Where's the party?
I haven't posted a review on this site but this one has brought me out of the shadows.

There's no party in this short film so the title is misleading; at best all you can hope for is the class costume parade at the end - and considering school's don't do that any more this is a peek at how things used to be one upon a time.

I've watched this twice and still can't make heads or tails of it. This film is like a pork rind: it has offers little of value or fulfillment...it's just there. By far Shep the dog is, hands (or paws) down, the best actor in the whole cast. It has some camp value and is worth watching at least once. It's your Halloween Party and you'll cry if you want to.

Subject: I love everything about this movie
From the taunting of the Halloween-hating, potentially vicious family dog, to the kid in the 'negro-mask' at the end, this movie never ceased to be anything but wonderfully surreal.

And the destroyed costume was literally pipe cleaners glued to a paper bag. Yeah, you'll never replace THAT in time. Just whip up a 'lady Scarecrow' costume instead.

Sad Sorry Scarey, INDEED!

Subject: 1953 Film made for younger children
This is a film made for the younger elementary school children back in 1953. I think it was cute for its time.

Subject: Who were these 'for' back in 1953?
Seeing these old films, I always wonder who was the target audience for these shorts? Were they made to show kids in school on old 8mm reel ? I wonder if the actors at the time knew how ridiculous they all were. The other reviewer had it spot on.

Subject: Poor shep!
I've been around these parts for over 10 years now, and I've thought I've seen it all. But then I see stuff like "Halloween Party" which restores my love (not that any of it has gone away!) for the archive and it's many treasures. Full of stuff that's both archaic and strange, This movie starts with a Mother and her two children non chalantly going to the window when someone knocks on the window. Shouldn't they be on their guard? And what good is their huge German Shepherd Shep? But wait! It's only Dad! Silly man! He's brought home Halloween stuff! Junior makes a truly hideous mask from a paper bag and sets it IN THE LAMP to make it look more ominous (even more so when it catches on fire). The family make a jack o lantern from a pumpkin! Shep the dog doesn't like it! Grrr grrr! lol The next day, Shep is still pissed off, and takes his frustration on the paper mask! Oh no! the mask was going to be used in a school halloween costume contest! No worries! Mom creatively grabs some fabric, some makeup, and a "mexican hat" and voila, her son is now, yes, a "female scarecrow". Yes, A FEMALE SCARECROW. WHAT THE BLUE BLAZING HELL. He wins first place in the halloween contest and that's enough to make Shep jump over the children. Repeatedly. Oh. My. God. This is a total MUST SEE on this site.
